Hibernation Never Looked So Good

On the day I sat down to write this column it was C-O-L-D outside.

As in…Brrrrrrr.

And with the cold temperature comes a tendency to hole up in our homes whenever possible, acting, in much the same way, as a bear in hibernation. Which is all well in good if you lived in a regular run-of-the-mill subdivision.

But we don’t.

New Town is different. It’s a full blown community with businesses that need to thrive in order for the entire community to truly thrive.

It’s a fairly simple matter of cause and effect, really. If we stop patronizing the businesses in New Town because it’s too cold to get ice cream or a slab of ribs, then we run the risk of those niceties not being around when the weather warms up once again. And it will. It always does.

If anything, the nearly-at-your-doorstep-conveniences we have in New Town are especially nice at this time of year. The long trip in the cold car for groceries isn’t necessary with Marsala’s around the corner. That no-cooking night doesn’t have to be eliminated in the face of being crammed shoulder to shoulder in the entry way of a chain restaurant as you wait to be seated—just head over to Ruskin O’Brien’s or grab some take-out from Rudy’s Ribs.

Need a haircut? Easy. Head over to Zephyr on Rue Royale. Not excited about bathing your dog in the cold weather? Let the folks at American Puppy Grooming (also on Rue Royale) take over.

Getting a little tired of your personal retreat now that you’re spending more time inside—staring at the walls, day after day? Stop by the Grateful Thread or The Décor Room and see what little touches you can add to make your home seem fresh again.

And the best part is this: you can reach any and all of these businesses in less than a mile from just about any house in New Town. Which essentially means you can get what you want—whether it be food, a clean dog, a new-do, or an interior overhaul—and be back home before your lips turn blue.

Sounds like my kind of hibernation.
