Pick Your Spot

By: Laura Bradford
Creative Writer

I suspect everyone who lives here in New Town has a spot. A place they flock to more than others.

Perhaps they’ve chosen their spot based on visual appeal—a place they find to be particularly picturesque or peaceful.

Perhaps it’s a specific destination—like T.Alderson’s, Ruskin O’Brien’s, or Rudy’s Ribs.

Perhaps it’s the site of a favorite event—like the amphitheater, sand volleyball courts, or Triangle Park.

Or maybe it’s simply a place synonymous with ease and convenience—like Marsala’s or Drama Clean.

Regardless of the reason or geographical specifics though, a personal spot is magical. In fact, at the risk of sounding like a writer, a personal spot—to me—is like a lighthouse through the fog…

It’s that place that makes you feel welcome. And safe to dream.

I have a spot. A very specific spot. At a fairly specific time. And it’s become my sort of lighthouse over the past year.

It’s where I think.

It’s where I veg.

It’s where I work through plot kinks in my latest manuscript.

And, more often than not, it’s where I dream.

Funny thing is, I’ve connected with this place so strongly that I can actually call it up in my mind when I’m away from home and in need of my spot. I can hear the sounds of water raining down, I can feel the soft breeze on my face, and I can even see the looming nightfall and the streetlamps springing to life around me.

Sure, I prefer the real thing every chance I get. But I’ll take the recalled version in lieu of nothing. Because having a spot that stirs your imagination and gives lift to your wings is nothing short of a treasure.

So how about you? Where’s your special spot?
